Rooted in Ancient Wisdom, Validated by Rigorous Research
-
Herbal medicine is medicine made from plants, either the whole plant or parts of it. Plants have been used as medicine for thousands of years across cultures worldwide. Modern scientific research and rigorous clinical trials into plant compounds confirms that they contain a multitude of medicinally active compounds that work synergistically as whole plant medicine. Herbal medicine is evidence based, safe and effective.

Treating the cause, not just the symptom
A medical herbalist is a trained healthcare professional who uses medicinal plants to support a wide range of health conditions. The practice of herbal medicine is regulated and members of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) hold a BSc degree or equivalent in Herbal Medicine, have studied orthodox medicine as well as plant medicine and are trained in the same diagnostic skills as a GP. The skill of a medical herbalists lies in understanding the interactions between body systems, diagnosing the underlying cause and prescribing an effective combination of medicinal herbs that gently nudge the body back into balance. We thoroughly check any potential interactions with orthodox medicine, only prescribing remedies that can safely be used alongside other medication and treatments.
No generic protocols. Care is tailored to you.
Because everybody expresses distress and disease differently, your prescription is created specifically for you. This is very different to buying an off-the-shelf herbal remedy.

Free initial phone call
If you would like to discuss whether herbal medicine may be helpful for you, I offer a free 10-minute no obligation phone consultation for new patients.
First consultation (60 minutes)
During your first consultation I will build up a full picture of you and your health. We will discuss the nature, onset and progression of your health condition, and any investigations you have had to date.
I will ask about:
your current symptoms, when they began and how they have changed
previous investigations or diagnoses
allergies
medical history
family history
current or previous treatment
lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress, exercise, social life, smoking, alcohol and social support
diet and digestion
Where clinically appropriate, I may ask if you would mind a physical examination to assist with the diagnosis, which could include:
taking your blood pressure
listening to your chest or lungs with a stethoscope
looking more closely at your skin, tongue, mouth, eyes, hands or nails
gently pressing on and around your abdomen
asking you to move your limbs
checking your reflexes
asking you to complete a cognitive task
I may also suggest further tests with your GP if needed.
This initial assessment will take around 60 minutes and will allow me to develop a personalised treatment plan that will include herbal remedies and, where appropriate, dietary changes or nutritional supplements. The herbal prescription will be tailored to your individual needs. I will explain which herbs I am prescribing and why so that you will understand why you are taking them and what to expect.
Most herbal medicines are given in the form of a liquid tincture or as herbal tea. Tablets, ointment, cream or lotion may also form part of the prescription.
I generally recommend in-person appointments for new patients so that I can get to know you properly. I offer in- person appointments in Sheffield (Heeley, Meersbrook, Sharrow and Nether Edge).
Follow up
A follow-up in 3–4 weeks lets us check how you are getting on and adjust the treatment plan if necessary. Follow-up appointments are available in person, online or by telephone and take between 20 - 30 minutes. Because herbal medicines work in a gentle and subtle way, they can take longer to work than orthodox drugs, but their effects are long lasting and there should be no side effects.
